Sharif Bey, associate professor in the School of Art, is having the solo show "Excavations" at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh through March 6, 2022. The exhibition presents new works inspired by the artist’s "excavations" of the museum collections that first piqued his interest as a youth visiting Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History. On view are mask-like forms, necklaces made from pinch pot-style vessels as beads, and site-specific temporary installations that incorporate Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s broad collections of artifacts and specimens.

Department of Drama Announces 2021-22 Season, Returns to In-Person, Live Performance

The Department of Drama announced a return to in-person, live performance for the 2021-22 season beginning with the contemporary romantic comedy “In Love and Warcraft” Nov. 12 – 20 in the Arthur Storch Theater. In addition to “In Love and Warcraft,” the shows that make up the five-play subscription season include “Matilda the Musical” (Nov. 19 – Jan. 2 and co-produced with Syracuse Stage), “Sender” (Feb. 19 – 27), “Cymbeline” (March 26 – April 3), and a musical adaptation of “As You Like It” (April 29 – May 7). Statement on Closure of New Admissions to the Art Video B.F.A. and M.F.A. Programs

Recent decisions regarding the stand-alone art video B.F.A. and M.F.A. programs have caused confusion and concern for students, faculty and alumni. I want to provide some context for this decision and correct some misperceptions that exist. First, current B.F.A. and M.F.A. students in art video will be supported until graduation with the full curriculum they expected when they enrolled at Syracuse University. No faculty positions will be eliminated as a result of this decision. Rochele Royster, assistant professor of art therapy in the Department of Creative Arts Therapy, was named a 2021 Educator of Distinction by the Illinois Art Education Association. The award recognizes notable, high-caliber art and design professionals who serve as exemplars for the field. Morton Kaish ’49: A Print Retrospective Exhibition at Palitz Gallery in New York City

Opening Nov. 8 and spanning over seven decades, the exhibition of 31 prints of varying media highlights Kaish’s mastery of traditional and emerging techniques, starting with an early drawing Kaish created as a student at the University in 1945, through his experimental years in Italy and culminating in the dramatic color and patterns of his current “Butterflies” series. Kaish is an alumnus of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Setnor School of Music's Setnor Auditorium was featured in an article on Commercial Integrator for modernizing and upgrading its infrastructure with the help of Dante, Audinate’s AVoIP solution. The renovation included a move from analog cabling to audio networking while preserving the historical significance of the building. Kevin Muldoon '10 G'13, faculty member and Setnor's sound recording engineer, was interviewed.

Join the Lender Center Conversation: ‘Creative Activity as a Human Right’

For James Haywood Rolling Jr. ’91, the upcoming “Creative Activity as a Human Right” event is two months in the planning but decades in the making. Rolling, a dual professor of arts education in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and teaching and leadership in the School of Education, is the new co-director of the Lender Center for Social Justice. Marvin Lender ’63 and his wife, Helaine Gold Lender ’65, created the interdisciplinary Lender Center to fulfill their enduring mission to develop ethical and courageous citizens.

Through her nonprofit Chorosynthesis, Wendy K. Moy, assistant professor of music education in the Setnor School of Music and School of Education, launched the second version of the Empowering Silenced Voices Choral Database, a free searchable database of choral literature on themes of social consciousness. She was selected to co-present the workshop "Singing for Social Consciousness -- Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs" at the National College Music Society Conference, held in October in Rochester, New York.

Panel Discussion, Live Music Highlight ‘Return to Jabberwocky’ During Orange Central

As part of Syracuse University’s Orange Central alumni weekend, the College of Visual and Performing Arts will co-host an event titled “Return to Jabberwocky” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, in the lower level of Bird Library. “The Jab,” as it was fondly called, was a student-run musical venue that operated in the Kimmel Hall basement from 1969-85. The event will feature live music and a panel discussion from people involved in operations of the Jab.
