Two VPA Faculty Members Awarded 2023 Guggenheim Fellowships in Photography
Two faculty members in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) have been awarded 2023 Guggenheim Fellowships in the field of photography by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Susannah Sayler and Edward Morris (Sayler/Morris) of VPA’s Department of Film and Media Arts were among the 171 scientists, writers, scholars and artists honored. Chosen from a rigorous application and peer review process out of almost 2,500 applicants, Sayler / Morris were appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise.

VPA Industry Day Connects Students with Alumni and Industry Professionals
On March 24, the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ (VPA) Office of Academic and Career Advising hosted its second annual VPA Industry Day in partnership with Syracuse University Career Services. Eighteen alumni and industry professionals came to campus to meet with students for panel discussions, information sessions, portfolio reviews and a networking lunch.

Arts Management Leader Anwar Nasir ’06 to Deliver 2023 VPA Convocation Address
Arts management leader Anwar Nasir ’06 will deliver the 2023 convocation address to bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) at the college’s convocation ceremony on Saturday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Nasir, who earned a bachelor of science degree from VPA’s Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, is the executive director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) in New Orleans, where he ensures the fulfillment of the LPO’s longstanding mission to transform people and communities through music while helping to craft the next stage in the organization’s growth.

Zeke Leonard, associate professor of environmental and interior design and associate director of the School of Design, was named as a collaborator on the Medjehu Project, an international collaboration studying ancient Egyptian woodworking. Leonard's research involves the roles that craft practice, social responsibility and environmental stewardship in contextually-relevant design and fabrication practices.

Abbie Wood, a second-year organ performance major in the Setnor School of Music, was awarded first prize in the American Guild of Organists/Quimby Regional Competition (Alexandria, Virginia) for students under the age of 23. She will now go on to the final round of the competition, which will be held at the regional convention of the American Guild of Organists in Westchester County, New York, in early July. The Quimby Regional Competition is the most significant competition in the U.S. for organ students of this age group.

Alex Mendez Giner, associate professor of film in the Department of Film and Media Arts, recently traveled to the Republic of Panama at the invitation of the minister of culture and the national director of Panama's Film Commission to introduce a new generation of filmmakers to the art of scriptwriting and to share his recent research "Imaginary Shadows" on the use of cinematography tools to analyze and interpret chiaroscuro effects in painting. Martinez, assistant professor of theater design and technology in the Department of Drama, is costume designer for the New York City Children's Theater production of "Fish in a Tree" at Theatre Row, which was recently featured in the New York Times. The play is co-directed by Sammy Lopez '13 with set designs by Ann Beyersdorfer '14, both drama alumni.
