Moving Forward and Giving Back
Alum In 2008, Jackieleen Verdejo walked the stage at Commencement to receive her bachelor’s degree in communication and rhetorical studies from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. She also completed minors in writing and sociology. The humanities devotee soon found her professional niche in an unlikely industry: financial operations. “I graduated during the recession, so finding a job was difficult,” she recalls. “I reluctantly applied to Chase Bank, and after a rigorous interview process I was actually hired!” She became a personal banker at Chase Bank and found that she really enjoyed investigating financial crimes. CRS Student Co-Creates Tableau Media As a Powerful Voice for Marginalized Identities
Gabbi Holliman-Lopez, a junior studying communication and rhetorical studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and Hanna Seraji, working towards her master’s degree in library science, are both avid readers and know well that stories inspire personal and social change. They saw, though, that the stories often told were not of those from a different background or marginalized identity- that these crucial voices were missing and people from these identities did not see a reflection of themselves in art. Light Work’s Urban Video Project (UVP) will host Horizons: New Film out of Central New York, Sept. 3-5. Syracuse University Ranked No. 16 on Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 American Film Schools List
The Hollywood Reporter has ranked Syracuse University No. 16 on its 2020 list of Top 25 American Film Schools. The University moved up two spots from 2019, when it was ranked No. 18. This is the eighth consecutive year the University’s film programs have been included on the list. The Syracuse University Art Museum is launching a series of virtual conversations, Art @ Home, connecting contemporary artists and their work to friends and alumni of Syracuse University. The August schedule of artists includes four College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) alumni: Helen Zughaib ’81 (August 6), Jave Yoshimoto G’12 (Aug. 11), Richard Pasquarelli ’90 (Aug. 18) and Deborah Roberts G’14 (Aug. 20). ‘Living Legacy’ Gift Will Support Academic Scholarships for VPA Students
“It’s a living, growing thing.” That’s how Syracuse University College of Law alumnus Andrew Greenberg L’84 describes his most recent $1 million gift to Syracuse University to establish the Sidney M. ’49 and Winifred E. Greenberg Scholarships in honor of his mother and late father. Greenberg believes that giving a deserving student scholarship support opens the door to an opportunity to grow, thrive and contribute in ways that might otherwise not be possible.
