Project Title: Storage shelter and safety product designed for living on the streets of NYC for the Unhoused

Product Name: Nest Pack

Designer Bio:

I was born in New Jersey But recently have moved to Chelsea in New York City. I’ve grown up loving design specifically the creation aspect and invention.

What intrigues me about industrial design is ability to be creative while also creating a product that is functional to any human activities. I love to find out the inner workings of a product and learning about new mechanisms that can create functional pieces in a product.

Project Description:

Many individuals who are forced to live without housing are facing harsh living environments. In 2021, 640 people died while experiencing homelessness in New York City. Homelessness is caused by the lack of affordable housing, eviction, domestic violence, job loss, poverty, mental illness, addiction disorders, and more.
Shelter is a human right yet so many individuals are living on the streets. Data has shown that many people actually decide to sleep outside instead of staying in the shelter system because of safety concerns from others in the facilities along with the harsh rules that are enforced.

Final Product:

Nest Pack

The Nest Pack is a product designed to allow individuals living without permanent housing to live more comfortably on the streets of New York City. This product is based on the laws that restrict the behavior of un-housed individuals while also being designed for the stresses that come with living on the street. The Nest Pack is meant to create change in the experience of those without homes and fight the negative connotations associated with their living situation. Instead of designing benches to be uncomfortable and pushing people out of the city or to less favorable areas the nest pack is designed to help their situation. The city environment is very fast and harsh, it’s up to those living there to support and help each other get by.

Nest Pack Sketch

I explored what people are using, different camping equipment for the outdoors and looked into products others have explored to help the unhoused to live on the street.
