Project Title: Technical Design for natural and urban environments
Product Name: Targa
Designer Bio:
My name is Aidan Headrick; a product designer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Industrial and Interaction Design, and a minor in Fashion Design.
Growing up hiking, camping, and skiing led to product design for the outdoors to be a passion of mine. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the design world in designing garments for natural and urban environments that are both functional and fashionable. The brands that fall into this category thrive in the overlap between product design and fashion design, resulting in highly technically designed garments with complex pattern designs, sportswear-inspired aesthetics, and performance fabrics. This is of particular interest to me, as I am looking to join this sector as a junior designer and contribute to the innovative, boundary-pushing products reaching the market today.

Product Description:
Convertible pants have remained relatively unchanged in their construction since the 1980s. While most commonly designed for outdoor pursuits, the convertible pants market has expanded to a wider range of design intents. Despite this, there has yet to be a leap in the design language to conceal the modularity of convertible pants to strengthen the value of the individual products.
There are 3 categories of convertible pants on the market today:
Sportswear: Designed for performance in the outdoors, with the selling point being the ability to don and doff the legs in response to changing conditions on the trail.
High Fashion: Designed for styling opportunities; the selling point being the value of a two-for-one product.
Technical Design: Convertible pants that utilize a combination of both intents, attempting to not sacrifice functionality or fashionability. These products rely on a niche consumer base that has a toe dipped in both of the previously mentioned categories.
Considering the success of many technical design brands, there is a shocking gap in the market for consumers who would invest in a more aesthetically pleasing, performance-driven concept.
My product, Targa, seeks to capitalize on this market and bring attention to the flaws of the convertible pants world with a researched-backed design.
