Project Title: Creating a Safer Crutch
Product Name: MobilMate
Problem: I found that over half of a million people in the United States use crutches, with axillary crutches being the most common. I developed a research study using both quantitative and qualitative data to determine if other crutch users shared my experience. Based on the responses to the most hypothesis-relevant questions in the survey, it can be concluded that crutch users find that their crutches frequently fall over, making it difficult to store them within safe reach. The majority have had to ask for help retrieving their crutches. Thematic analysis of qualitative responses allowed me to develop themes that will guide further research and crutch design. These themes of “storability,” “collapsible,” “foldable,” and “hold together” transformed and narrowed my crutch design question to: How can crutches be designed to stand alone within safe reach of the user?’. The decision to address the function of stand-alone storability and ease of access for the user is defined and supported by my research methods and the current lack of design solutions for these problems.
