David DeAngelis is an assistant professor of music education in the Setnor School of Music and the School of Education.

Prior to joining Syracuse University, DeAngelis was a fellow at Northwestern University's Center for the Study of Education and the Musical Experience, where he received his Ph.D. in music education. At Northwestern, DeAngelis also served as a program coordinator for Arts and Music Programs for Education in Detention Centers (AMPED), a hip-hop songwriting program for incarcerated youth at Chicago’s Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.  
 
DeAngelis taught for eight years at public schools in Arkansas and California, founding the music program at KIPP San Francisco College Prep. He has also worked at Google. His research and teaching interests include beginning instrumental instruction, popular music pedagogy, and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in music education, especially in music teacher preparation. 
  
DeAngelis holds a B.A. in music from Yale University and an M.A. in music education from the Eastman School of Music. He has recently published articles in the Journal of Music Teacher Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and he has presented research at the Society for Music Teacher Education and National Association for Music Education national conferences. You can hear his music as the keyboardist and violinist for indie rock bands Zorila and Dangermaker.
