Diane Grimes, associate professor in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, co-authored “Through the Lens of Whiteness: Challenging Racialized Imagery in Pop Culture” (Skinner House). The book examines how visual imagery in our popular culture is dominated by white ways of seeing, considers the contributions such images make to white supremacy culture in the United States, and how challenging those norms can support antiracist efforts.
Grimes also co-wrote the chapter “Race and Organizational Communication: Tired of Saying It” in The Routledge Handbook of Ethnicity and Race in Communication (Routledge). The chapter explores recent work in organizational communication and related writing on race by considering progressive work on difference and diversity/DEI, drawing on the writing and experiences of organizational communication scholars interrogating their discipline and the ivory tower as spaces where race is relevant.
