Twelve College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) students were among the 74 Syracuse University undergraduates who received 2020-21 funding from the University’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (the SOURCE) in the form of SOURCE Academic Year Grants (up to $5,000) and Renée Crown University Honors Program Awards (up to $5,000).
The SOURCE provides expanded funding opportunities and serves as a hub to foster and support diverse undergraduate engagement in faculty-guided scholarly research and creative inquiry across all disciplines and programs at the University. Student research and creative projects may be produced by students at all levels in classes, labs, recitals, as part of a distinction or thesis program, or independently.
The following VPA students received 2020-21 SOURCE grants or awards for their projects:
- Alana Barker, a junior stage management major in the Department of Drama, for “Non-Visual Theatre: Telling Stories Through Sound” (Don Buschmann, faculty mentor), Honors Program Crown Award
- Neil Bradley, a senior industrial and interaction design major in the School of Design, for “Documenting and disseminating sustainable practices in wooden furniture production for designers, industry leaders, and indigenous carpentry practitioners” (Dianna Miller, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
- Michael Carpenter, a senior computer art and animation major in the Department of Transmedia, for “Motion Capture & Medicine” (Heath Hanlin, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
- Alyssa Chang, a senior film major in the Department of Transmedia, for “The Light Within” (Kelly Gallagher, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
- Li Chen, a senior art photography major in the Department of Transmedia, for “In The Wind” (Laura Heyman, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
- Raul Hernández Guardans, a senior acting major, for “Sonder Films” (Robert Bundy, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
- Erica Jules, a senior industrial and interaction design major for the School of Design, for “Empowering our Bodies: Providing Sexual Health & Wellness Equity for the African American Community” (Isabel Prochner, faculty mentor), SOURCE Academic Year Grant
