Artist Statement

My mother suffered a brain aneurysm when I was 16. Afterward, I realized that I didn’t know who she was outside of being mommy and began to explore her photographic archive in hopes of discovering who she was outside of my mother and our relationship to each other. "Memories Always Remember You" is a collage of resurrection that signifies kinship, joy, and grief. "I Am Your Daughter" is a short film that reanimates the dynamics of my mother’s and my current relationship. The photographs in "Silent I Love You’s" illuminate the ways our family shows care within our home. The grace of my mother’s touch on my cheek brings me comfort, while my grandfather gently washes the outside of the house. Using my mother’s archive, film photography, video, installation, and our history under the lychee tree showcases our journey.
