Artist Statement

Born and raised in Chengdu, a city far from the political center in mainland China, I have witnessed how the thriving metropolis under the reform and opening policy designed by Deng Xiaoping has wrought sweeping transformation in the field of culture, politics, and in the lives of its inhabitants. I thus observed the individual's existential anxiety in the face of the great changes of the times. This anxiety can be seen in my short films — "Island In Green" (2020), "About You About Me" (2022), and "Crows Gathering Before Winter" (2024).

Artist Bio

Haoran Zeng (b. 1999) is a writer-director from People’s Republic of China. He holds a bachelor's degree in management (film producing) from Communication University of Zhejiang in China and is in the final stages of earning a master's of fine arts degree in film at Syracuse University, which he expects to receive in May 2024. He has gained practical industry experience through working in film production in both the United States and China. Furthermore, as he undertook a 35mm film project at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) during a semester abroad and made a short film there, "Father Daughter and Death" (2023), he was afforded valuable insights into the European film landscape.
