Artist Statement

As an interdisciplinary artist, Angelica Starcovic’s works visualize femme aesthetics born from heteronormative culture and their ties to violence, fear, repression, and control. The representations are imagined from her perspective as a cisgender femme facing the patriarchal infrastructure of the world. Bodily mutilations appear as metaphor for psychological wounding with references to Roman Catholic dogma and coming-of-age American social culture. Overall, her work is a critique of the violent misogyny enacted toward the image of ‘girl’ and representation of its effects on a body it is aimed at.
