Artist Statement

As a digital illustrator, comic artist, and character designer, the primary focus of my work is to create a believably intricate world for viewers to immerse themselves in.

Spiritbearers is, ultimately, a fairly simple story of a young woman coming into her own as an adult. A journey of self-discovery. Over the course of Spiritbearers, Mjlla (mie-lah) goes from a family oriented farmer to a powerful mortal host of a god. Her naivité melts away into a broader understanding of the world and the people within it.

I make the work I needed to see growing up — work that presents people like me as powerful, capable, and important.

Bio

CNY-based illustrator Anika Zetterberg has been focusing on comics and character design since 2013. After receiving their Bachelors in Visual Art (Drawing Focus), they decided to continue their education and pursue their Master of Fine Arts Degree at Syracuse University, with a focus in Illustration. They are currently working on a long-term webcomic that will be published online by 2025.
