Indigenous
b.1970

My work captures what is happening in that moment and time, with minimal interruption of my own perception. I use my camera to document the event, trusting the process to unfold into whatever is meant to be. This experience directs how my narrative as an Algonquin christian indigenous woman of mixed ancestry is told. Historically known as a “Praying Indian” my work embodies loss resulted from colonization and assimilation that led my people to Christianity. I document places where my ancestors once lived and the loss of family, land, language, and cultural genocide. This has shaped my identity as an indigenous woman who walks in two worlds. Consistently expected to fit into how society depicts what an indigenous person should be. My work has become my weapon, aimed towards decolonizing the endless objectification that indigenous people continue to be subjected to and how we are portrayed in film and museums. Through imagery and sound, my goal is to make the observer reflect on what it means to be indigenous and want to know more about the true history of all indigenous people.
