Maya Stern

I come from a family of inherent conflict, rooted from the union of opposing ancestries with subsequent tension that lingers due to unresolved trauma(s). Opposites Attract depicts my grandparent’s wedding photograph, screenprinted with bleach, then woven together. I seek to explore the information deemed significant within an image and the inability to contain memory, despite a record of it. The original image only exists as a low-resolution, undersized digital scan, as the original print has long been lost or discarded.

One Life To Live is a series of iron screenprints on muslin of the unfinished autobiography written by my Omi, Hildegard Piwak Stern, written in the 1960's. In this context, this story is published as a printed document to be read by a greater audience to commemorate the story of a World War II survivor who lived in occupied Vienna, Austria. Similar to the iron embedded in the fiber, One Life To Live ages with the reader - endlessly, yet slowly, corroding over time.
