I am fascinated by puns.

Puns are fun as they play with our expectations of language and understanding, but also provide a quick and cheap form of entertainment. I see laughter as a powerful force to quickly create bonds between people and I look to utilize humor in my artistic practice to connect with my audience.

PineApple Tree (2021) is the manifestation of a joke my father would tell me every year, when apples would pop up under pine trees in the Maine woods as hunters endeavored to bait deer for an easy kill. In the first instance of the joke, we were walking through the woods and saw some apples under some trees. Without thinking, I asked the air how those apples had gotten there; thoughtlessly, innocently, thinking out loud. Without missing a beat, my father replied “Obviously they’re PineApples and those are PineApple Trees” and he kept walking.

Ask a stupid question - get a stupid answer.

Only those that truly love you can so quickly and eloquently point out how funny and stupid what you just said was.

The pineapple pun from my story has grown beyond the original wordplay to sculpturally engage ideas of how people relate to the natural world, through the materials and organisms humans harvest and surround themselves with to sustain their daily lives.
