Emilia Smart-Denson

Emilia (she/her/hers) is an Oregon-born, New York City-based non-profit theater maker, live event enthusiast, and outdoor explorer.

Importantly, Emilia believes that how we make theater is just as important as what we make and she brings her understanding that theater has immense potential to do good in the world into all her work. From production management in academic and professional settings, to extensive administrative work experience in non-profit theaters as well as theater service organizations, Emilia knows theater making from the inside out. She uses this knowledge to create an environment that values communities, backgrounds, and experiences that have been systematically excluded from dominant narratives in the non-profit theater field. Favorite experiences include running Black Box Player’s Kilroys’ List Play Reading Club, pivoting the 2020 TCG National Conference to the first ever TCG Virtual Conference, introducing projection design to the SU Drama LOFT Theatre for the first time, and calling animal control to get a woodchuck out of Pendragon Theatre’s Box Office during a world premier play reading.

When she’s not re-imagining the future of the non-profit theater field, Emilia enjoys long walks among the trees, cooking with chickpeas, and trying to play the harmonica.
