Better System for the Newcomers

Product Name: Better Life, Better Living

Topic/problem description:

The United States of America has been filled with immigrants since the 1900s. From researching the difficulties, immigrants faced from the early 19th century to the 21st century. The struggles that the immigrants usually faced was the fitting into the culture, accessing services, prejudice of immigrants, language barrier, housing, visa or government, success, isolation from families (Lackzo, 2019). The language barrier was a common struggle of the immigrants, but this was something that the immigrants had expected when they decided on immigration. Through a user journey map of Cindy, a woman who immigrated to her children in 2016, expected her struggle to communicate, so she tried harder to learn English and try to stay positive. The other struggle that the newcomers were facing was fitting into the culture and accessing services while looking for information about neighborhood, hospital system, school, public transportation, and bank service to adapt their living in a new country. Although the internet in the 21st century is more developed and advanced than the internet in the 19th century, it is still hard to “google” or search on “how-to-survive in the U.S.A.,” “the rules behind the hospital system in the U.S.A.,” or “common knowledge of Americans.” Immigrating to America is tough, and the overall process of immigration is hard and overwhelming, especially when there is no one they know around the region they live in. Easing into life in America, and getting access to services and insider’s information of living in the United States is something that most of the newcomers have difficulties with.

After discovering these findings, how can I ease the transition of the newcomers into their lives in the United States of America?

Solution:

Better Life, Better Living will help the users to adapt to life in a new country and also cope with the emotional hardship of being used to a new system. Through a user journey map with a potential user of the solution, the period of the familiarization for her was two years, and some people may take longer to get to know the system in a new country. With an online and offline platform, it would ease the user immigration process by providing centralizing information about settling in America for the first time. In order to welcome them after all the hardship, giving a special “gift” that is customized to the user would be something that can be helpful to get through to settle in a new country. Through many iterations of ideation, prototyping, and user tests, the final design is the welcome package box for the newcomers with an informative guide to America, a notepad to take personal notes, a photobook to cope with a reminiscence of hometown, and special gifts. The user would look into the BL product before arriving in America and register on an online website to gather the information of the user. The welcome package is going to be delivered to the user’s house in America as they move-in.

With Better Life, Better Living products and services, the newcomers will be able to ease their transitions into immigrating to America.
