Auditioning for our choirs
Auditions are held at the beginning and end of each year for all select SU choral ensembles. The audition serves as an opportunity for experienced faculty to guide students in selecting the choral ensemble that fits them best. While not every ensemble requires an audition, we strongly encourage anyone interested in singing in one of our choirs to complete an audition.
For students wanting to audition:
Auditions for SU choral ensembles are held each semester. Current students should audition for the following school year at the end of the spring semester (late April) just before summer break. Auditions for new students or students that were studying off-campus during the previous spring semester are held at the very beginning of the fall semester.
For the 2013-14 school year, we will be holding auditions on:
- Tuesday, April 30, 2013 9am-5pm
- Wednesday, May 1, 2013 9am-5pm
- Sunday, August 25, 2013 1pm-5pm
- Monday, August 26, 2013 9am-5pm
- Tuesday, August 27, 2013 9am-5pm
We are happy to schedule audition appointments for those students interested in joining a choir mid-year on a case-by-case basis.
All auditions are held in Crouse College (Room 302) and last about eight minutes. No preparation is necessary. The audition consists of vocalization (listening to your tone and determining your vocal range), tonal memory exercises, and sight-singing. There will also be time to answer any questions you may have about the different choirs we offer.
To schedule an audition, please email suchoral@syr.edu or call 315-443-4106.
Please note:
The Windjammer vocal jazz ensemble, Black Celestial Choral Ensemble, and all student-run a cappella groups hold their own auditions. Contact the individual organization directly to learn about their audition process and to schedule an audition.
For community members interested in auditioning for the Syracuse University Oratorio Society, please visit the ensemble’s audition page for more information.
