The Mandarins

The Mandarins are a select a cappella ensemble founded in 1996 by music education major Natasha Schmemann. Members are auditioned from the Women’s Choir each semester and perform regularly on the Women’s Choir concerts and numerous other events.

Under the direction of Kelly Stallard, the Mandarins began “A Cappella After Hours,” a concert held each semester featuring all SU a cappella groups. Under the direction of Melissa Rashford and Rachel Roy, the group established a strong reputation in the a cappella community, becoming known for diverse repertoire and commitment to a high standard of musical excellence. Under their leadership, the Mandarins also competed in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), winning the Mid-Atlantic Region at the ICCA finals in April 2004 in New York City. The group has taken numerous awards for outstanding arrangements, outstanding soloists, and outstanding choreography since its founding.
