Department of Transmedia

In the Department of Transmedia, you will forge a strong vision and the capacity to act intelligently as an artist. We are committed to making your educational experience a meaningful exploration of media arts with strong, professional artistic practice. We offer a challenging environment where you create works of art using contemporary technology and a range of art media and also study pivotal histories and theories.

With four academic disciplines in art photography, art video, computer art, and film, we offer a wide range of courses and faculty expertise that provide both depth and breadth within a stimulating academic context. We also offer:

  • Curricula shaped to offer greater flexibility for unique academic experiences, all with a critical core structure in transmedia theory and practices
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary study with the college’s School of Art and Design and other University programs
  • A faculty of practicing artists who exhibit and lecture internationally and are actively involved in the Syracuse cultural community
  • Exhibition opportunities on and off campus, including at Light Work, Spark Contemporary Art Space, and Company Gallery

You will become an adept scholar who is cognizant of the psychological, social, and political implications of the world in which we live. In addition to developing character and artistic maturity, this directly affects your success upon graduation. Many of our alumni work for reputable companies in positions that require strong creative direction and knowledge of the history, theory, and techniques central to the media arts. Others work independently, screening and showing work and bringing prestige to their creative communities. Our alumni have also gone on to highly selective graduate programs, continuing to refine their vision and maturity as creative professionals.
