Each year the Graduate School grants the college a small number of modest stipends ($700 for 2004-2005) in the form of summer fellowships. The fellowships are only granted to graduate students who have held assistantships during the previous academic year and who are taking summer coursework with their surplus tuition scholarship credits. Students who held a half assistantship must be registered for 3 credits of summer coursework and are eligible for one payment in June; students who held full assistantships must be registered for 6 credits of summer coursework and are eligible for two payments, one each for June and July. Students holding assistantships should make inquiries of their department chair or faculty advisor, or call 443-3089, the Office of Graduate Student Affairs, for details.
The College of Visual and Performing Arts considers the presentation of original work at conferences, exhibitions, performances, etc., an essential student experience and, to this end, is able to provide some funding to help defray the cost of travel. Travel grants are offered in the fall and spring and will be advertised through the graduate student listserv.
The Creative Opportunity Grant is designed to support students in various disciplines and allow them to take advantage of unique opportunities that will benefit their academic/artistic work and enhance their career development. These grants provide support for single or multiple-student projects with preference being given to interdisciplinary projects. COG grants generally do not exceed $750.
This grant competition is for graduate students who are proposing to undertake research or creative projects in the spring or summer. Awards are offered to project proposals that will provide both scholarly fulfillment and help students take a significant stride toward degree completion.
The range of awards is generally between $500 and $1,000. In most cases, grants won through this competition will award only partial funding for a project. Students may wish to consult their academic departments to determine if supplemental funding is available. These projects are funded by the Graduate School, so depending upon the funds allocated, we are able to make 3 to 5 awards. The proposal process takes place in early March; notification of the awards is in early April.
