Sculpture

Sculpture involves three-dimensional experimentation with forms and ideas, materials and techniques. In our bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree program in sculpture, you are encouraged to cross boundaries as you explore creative ideas. Opportunities are available for working in traditional and contemporary media.

You receive instruction in modeling, metal casting, welding, plastics fabrication, stone and wood fabrication, and mixed media applications. Concurrently, you are encouraged to pursue individual interests and specialties.

The spacious facilities are divided into workshops, studios, and project spaces. There are specific workshops for metal fabrication and welding, wood and stone carving/pneumatics, clay and plaster, sandblasting and patina, thermosetting resins, thermoplastics/vacuum forming, and metal casting, as well as a state-of-the-art wood shop. An additional general workspace is available for the assembly of work. A concrete pad and swinging boom are available for outdoor use, while an indoor project space is dedicated to installation, performance, or use as needed. An additional, larger exhibition space/gallery is available for student exhibitions. Undergraduate sculpture majors are assigned a semi-private studio space.

The School of Art and Design feels that drawing plays a vital and primary role in the creative life of an artist. Click here to read more about this common thread that weaves through our art and design programs.
