Our film program encourages students to explore the medium of film from an intellectual, creative, and personal standpoint. Our goal is to provide you with a stimulating and rewarding context for independent filmmaking, be it fictional, narrative, experimental, or animation.

This master of fine arts (M.F.A.) degree program’s unique curriculum integrates film production courses with film studies in history, culture, and theory. You can also take advantage of the University environment and study with other students in such areas as video, photography, computer art, music composition, creative writing, philosophy, and psychology.

You will work with faculty who are themselves active professionals in the world of filmmaking. The program also supports numerous student film showcases, including a juried show at a local Syracuse cinema.

Production facilities include an elaborate sound studio for mixing, dubbing, and music recording; 16 16mm nonsync cameras and nine sync sound units that include Arri SR with video assist, Arri BL, CP16, and Eclair NPR cameras with Nagra and D.A.T. recorders; and all other equipment necessary for the production of 16mm sound films, including an Oxberry animation room and optical printer studios, as well as six-plate and eight-plate flatbed editors.
