In the Setnor School of Music, our philosophy of graduate education focuses on preparing students for lifelong careers in the world of music and music education. We challenge you to take your musicianship to the next level, with private study and collaborative music-making in small and large group settings. We also challenge you to think critically about music and expand your horizons in the arts and humanities. This professionally oriented approach prepares our graduate students for positions of vital importance in the music world and as music educators in public schools and colleges.
Each graduate student is highly valued and receives personal attention and commitment from our nationally acclaimed faculty. They mentor you closely, and you can interact with them in diverse musical settings both on and off campus. Many faculty are performing professionals, including members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and their musical activities provide you with such learning opportunities as observing rehearsals and performances.
Unlimited opportunities for musical growth and professional development abound within the school and the major setting of Syracuse University. Performance opportunities [PDF] include such groups as the Symphony Orchestra, Oratorio Society, University Singers, Women's Choir, Morton Schiff Jazz Ensemble, Samba Laranja Brazilian Music Ensemble, Sour Sitrus Society, and the Pride of the Orange Marching Band. Many of these are streamed live on the Internet.
