Communications
Design
Communications designers are problem solvers. They translate their ideas and information through a variety of graphic media. Their particular talent lies not only in the traditional skills of the hand, but also in their ability to think strategically in design and marketing terms.
In this bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree program, design classes are modeled on professional practice. You will explore the creative process, communications theory and design history, and organizing and managing complex design projects using skills learned in illustration, photography, typography, and production processes. Your classes also will cover marketing, communications, and business. Communications design students select an area of specialization, such as branding and packaging; corporate identity programs and collateral; book, newspaper, or magazine design; exhibition or environmental design; or television or motion graphics.
Our students share space with the B.F.A. advertising design program in The Warehouse, the University’s recently renovated building in downtown Syracuse. Our facilities include staffed Macintosh clusters and a wireless studio environment. The program sponsors an active student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the professional association for design.
Graduates of our program work as senior designers, creative directors and art directors at some of the best firms in the country.
