Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies

The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies takes a broad approach to human communication. Our undergraduate program in communication and rhetorical studies focuses on developing strong communication skills and learning to take a communication perspective on every dimension of our lives: professionally, personally, and in our role as active community members.

Unlike many mass media programs that emphasize developing specialized skills within one particular medium, our program examines the whole communication process. We view human communication as a fundamentally creative activity in which participants construct goals; create visions of the future; and sustain important values, norms, politics, culture, and diverse ways of being human. We offer:

  • A flexible curriculum that effectively balances theory and knowledge with professional skills sought by employers
  • Freshman program workshops that help you adjust to college and learn how to take advantage of opportunities for dual majors, minors, and other programs
  • Active faculty who challenge conventional assumptions about communication and share research activities in the classroom
  • Opportunities for internships and study abroad in London, England, and other countries
  • Preparation for multiple career directions, including business, media, law, politics, and education
  • An active alumni network

Communication is a powerful force for change. Our students are poised to be strong leaders and advocates for shaping the social world in ways that honor differences and promote understanding.
