The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies' major in communication and rhetorical studies leads to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree. In this flexible program, you take 36 credits in communication and rhetorical studies, 54 credits in arts and sciences, and 30 credits in University-wide electives.
During your freshman year you build the foundation for later study. A series of freshman program workshops complements your coursework with guest speakers and forums on a variety of topics relevant to the freshman experience, including study abroad, career development, and community service, as well as an interactive alumni panel. You also begin your studies in SU's College of Arts and Sciences. We feel strongly that a broad education in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences complements your communication studies and serves you well throughout your lifetime.
After your freshman year, you begin more intensive study in various aspects of communication and rhetorical studies. In your professional courses, you study the communication process at all levels: individual, small group, organizational, and societal. These offerings are comprehensive and include courses in nonverbal communication, discussion leadership, interviewing, communication and community, persuasion, intercultural communication, organizational communication, public dialogue, and political communication. The specific courses you take depend on your particular interests.
In the College of Arts and Sciences, you may explore sociology, history, philosophy, economics, international relations, mathematics, physics, and any other subjects that interest you. Free electives permit you to develop expertise in other areas that complement your interests. In fact, the flexible curriculum makes it possible for students to consider dual majors and/or minors.
You graduate with communication competencies that employers increasingly make a priority in their employment searches. Our graduates have gone on to become public relations directors, advertising executives, real estate developers, news anchors, communication trainers, corporate managers, lawyers, educators, fund-raisers, personnel recruiters, and marketing executives.
