Biography:
Joshua Dekaney teaches drum set, leads the Brazilian Ensemble, and directs the drum line of the S.U. Marching Band. Originally from Houston, Texas, Mr. Dekaney has traveled extensively throughout Brazil studying folk and popular music. He has played drums and/or percussion for Dave Valentin, Angela Hagenbach, N’Kenge Simpson-Hoffman, Mary Fahl, and Aretha Franklin. Additionally, he has accompanied modern dance artists Jawole Zollar and Maia Claire Garrison and has recorded with the Boston Brass. Mr. Dekaney has performed with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, Binghamton Philharmonic, and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He received a master’s degree in music performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Kentucky. While at Kentucky he performed with and was later named assistant pit instructor of the Cavalier’s Drum & Bugle Corp. Mr. Dekaney has also taught the Florida State University’s steel band Mas ‘n Steel and FSU’s brazilian ensemble Samba Oba. Additionally, he is a former intern with the Yamaha Corporation of America. Mr. Dekaney is a past winner of the Multiple Percussion contest at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and was a Yamaha Young Performing Artist.
