The required studio course introduces students to a range of approaches relevant to the act of direct observation. Students will acquire specific manual and thinking skills essential to the understanding of the translation of form and space to the two-dimensional surface, including primary approaches to seeing, such as sighting, measuring, analysis of proportion, rudimentary perspective and elements of composition. Students will begin to understand how line, mark and value can be used to describe form, structure and character of objects in space through the application of a variety of black and white media. Historical and contemporary drawings are regularly introduced to give students a theoretical framework and knowledge of drawing as both a process and language. Critiques are structured to allow students to learn to read, analyze, describe and discuss drawings. Regular homework assignments and the use of a sketchbook are required aspects of the course, which allow students to develop a personal and creative approach to forming ideas and decision-making. Work standards and requirements of the course are structured to develop habits of attention, awareness, patience and presence.
