Time Arts

Introduction to Time Arts aims to explore ways in which to make art with time as its foundation. Various media and many approaches are investigated in relation to conceptual, cultural, formal and technical ways in which to shape a work that unfolds in time. Students learn how conceptual art, performance art, sound, animation, video and computer technology can be a basis for artmaking.

The technological aspects of this course include studying technology's role in society, and developing the ability to engage with equipment (hardware and software) in the creation of art: both as a practical skill of using specific machines and systems and also negotiating the relationship of this use with facets of artmaking.

Finally, the course aims to develop both critical thinking and research methods. Students work toward developing criteria for understanding time arts, ways to evaluate it, and the ability to articulate these criteria. They also collect of information in relation to specific projects, develop work processes, reflect upon how systems of meaning are experienced and the relationship of time-based forms to social and cultural contexts.
