2D Creative Processes

This required studio course emphasizes idea generation and strategies for students to effectively develop and communicate their ideas in a two dimensional format. They will become adept at transforming their ideas into visual compositional studies that include the vocabulary of line, shape, color, value, and texture and the formal structures of balance, space, proportion and movement.

Design, narrative, text and image will be explored through the use of various materials and techniques such as ink and markers, pencil, papers, paint, photocopies, montage, collage, transfers, frottage, printing, and nonconventional materials. Students will be encouraged to make conceptual connections with other areas of their studies so that their work becomes more in-depth, integrated and well informed. Play, experimentation, brainstorming and research along with a variety of thinking skills that include analytic, divergent, convergent, symbolic, metaphoric and discontinuous are all part of the creative process that the students will be actively engaged in. Students will be expected to develop a critical sense about their work and that of their fellow students.
