Robert Cooney

Associate Professor, Communications Design

Robert A. Cooney has worked as a design and marketing communications consultant in New York City for more than 30 years. Beginning as staff designer and then design director for Atelier International, a contract furnishings company, he moved on to become senior art director for the public relations firm of Burson-Marsteller at their headquarters in New York.

From there he established his own consulting offices in 1978 and has provided services since to a broad array of clients. During the latter part of this period, R.A. Cooney, Inc. was aligned with Principal Communications, a subsidiary of GCI Group and Grey Advertising. Acting as creative director for this specialty corporate and financial public relations agency, he oversaw all aspects of their clients’ creative needs, from corporate identity and advertising to marketing materials and collateral.

Cooney has created brand strategies and coordinated promotional programs for IBM, SAP, Standard & Poors, Ernst & Young, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. His award-winning work includes Compass Magazine for Continental Insurance; product brochures for Sony consumer products; and capability pieces for the Dannon Company, the Infiniti division of Nissan, the Investment Partnership Association, GE Capital Aviation Services, Residential Services Corporation of America, and Arbor National Commercial Mortgage. He has created annual reports for Fruit of the Loom, SS&C Technologies, and the Church Life Insurance Companies.

For the past 25 years Cooney has also been a tenured, associate professor of communications design at Syracuse University, where he received a B.F.A. in advertising design.
