HISTORY TRADITION VISION |

The Department of Drama was created in the early 1930’s by Sawyer Falk, one of the nation’s leaders in the development of theater programs at academic institutions. In 1974, Syracuse University hired Arthur Storch to serve as artistic director of Syracuse Stage and also as director of the Department of Drama in order to create a symbiotic relationship between the two organizations for the purpose of enhancing the students’ experiences while at Syracuse University. This relationship flourished under James J. Clark’s guidance as Producing Director from 1992-2007, with Tazewell Thompson and
Timothy J. Bond begins his tenure as Producing Artistic Director for the Stage and the Department with a vision to enhance and strengthen this unity even further. This unique affiliation between the Drama Department and Syracuse Stage, a LORT, Equity theater company, provides opportunities for our students to gain professional experience in all areas of study while working towards their undergraduate degrees. This close relationship between a major professional theater serving the city and a vigorous University program for training young professionals is fostered by their common home in one theater complex.

These productions and programs are open to the community at large in fulfillment of the University’s academic mission of Scholarship in Action.

Actors participate in workshops at the prestigious Globe Theatre which provides training in special skills such as stage movement and voice training in the Fall semester. A direct placement program with the London College of Fashion offers students majoring in Costume Design an opportunity to study costume design and technology during their junior year. Drama students may choose to study in Florence, Italy, where rich cultural resources in art, theater and opera provide an unforgettable and diverse educational experience.
Department of Drama alumni include numerous actors, directors, producers, designers and writers in theater, television and film. Over the years, many have won or have been nominated for top awards in their fields, reinforcing the Mission of the Department of Drama.
The Tepper Center for Careers in Theatre creates and supports a set of professional programs for the developing theater artist in the Department of Drama in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Current projects include a New York City orientation trip, an actor showcase for theater, film and television professionals, a lecture series, and a course titled "Professional Practices." All of the Tepper programs create opportunities for students to interact and learn the more practical aspects of the business from experienced artists in the profession. The Center serves as a bridge between their theater training life at SU and their transition into the professional work. |

In the same manner that a teaching hospital complements a medical program, the presence of a professional theater enhances the development of young theater artists. There are eighteen LORT* theaters in the United States that have training programs associated with colleges and universities. (Four additional theaters have their own accredited programs.) Of the 18 partnerships, only four focus on professional actor training for undergraduate students, and of these, Syracuse is the largest. |
