WELCOME

The study of theatre is the study of human interactions from ancient times to the present.  The Department of Drama at Syracuse University is distinctive in its approach to professional training for students seriously interested in any of the many careers available in the theatre and entertainment industries.  Conservatory-style training in a university setting shared with a resident, professional theatre, presents an unparalleled combination of teaching professionals and diverse performance and production opportunities

Syracuse University's vision of Scholarship in Action is put into practice as the symbiotic relationship between the Department and Syracuse Stage provides Drama students the opportunity to observe and interact with working professionals on a daily basis. The spectrum of theatrical experience for students provided by the Department of Drama includes co-productions with Syracuse Stage, faculty-directed main stage and laboratory productions, student-directed shows, community engagement activities and one-person cabarets. Productions encompass ideas and characters from different times and places presented through the collaborative efforts of many, and promote understanding of the common humanity shared by different peoples and cultures.

Our BFA programs in acting, musical theatre, design/tech, and stage management, as well as our flexible BS degree in Drama offer unique educational experiences while supporting strong development of skills for those who wish to explore the world of professional theatre in a setting that combines rigorous training within a professional theatre with a traditional university education. A combination of classroom practice and experiential learning opportunities, through productions and special projects, available to both BFA and BS students provide an excellent environment for learning.

The Syracuse University Department of Drama is committed to a learning environment that builds on a rich past as it enters a new era, encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry and leadership, to empower our students to create the theatre of the future.  Wednesday Labs provide a forum for student work, guest lectures and an insight to productions.

We encourage prospective students to explore our programs of study and schedule an on-campus visit. If you are committed to excellence in a career in the world of theatre and entertainment, and want to learn in a professional environment, we welcome your application to the Department of Drama
