SU:VPA students are encouraged to have a laptop

Courses Available to First-Year Students

Some SU:VPA programs include the option to "choose" a studio or academic elective on your first semester to complete your schedule (see specific instructions by major for more information.) To access the list, you can download the PDF below. You can also find this list under Resources on page 1 of the FTES form. The instructions for your major will refer to this list, so it is important to locate it and have it open when you’re completing your FTES form. We recommend that you read it ahead of time and decide which courses interest you the most.

Available academic elective courses are on pages 1-14, and studio elective courses are on page 15. The information you provide will assist advisors in building your fall schedule. Every effort will be made to place you in your choice of electives as long as there are available seats and no scheduling conflicts with required courses.

  • A laptop computer is expected for all students in the School of Art and School of Design.
  • Majors in the School of Art and School of Design are expected to have access to Adobe's Creative Suite applications, and we recommend subscribing to the Creative Cloud Student Edition and either Microsoft Office or Apple iWork.
  • Environmental and interior design students and industrial and interaction design students should have the current version of Microsoft Windows (via BootCamp if using a Mac).

Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies

Students should own a computer. Computer labs are available for any platform-specific classes.

Department of Drama

Acting or musical theater majors

Personal computers are strongly recommended but not required.

Theater design and technology or stage management majors

Students are required to have: a laptop (Windows or Mac) with good wireless capability (dual-band 802.11n), Microsoft Office, an external portable drive for file transfer and backup, and a security lock.

Setnor School of Music

Students in the Setnor School of Music use computers to access course materials, research music concepts, strengthen music theory and aural skills, collaborate with classmates, and communicate with faculty. Student computers should be capable of word processing, e-mail, internet browsing, music notation, and audio/midi/video editing. The Setnor School of Music supports student use of both Macintosh and PC platforms. It is strongly recommended that students consider purchasing a 15 inch MacBook Pro laptop computer model tailored for use at Syracuse University. Detailed information, including specifications and ordering information for the preferred laptops, is available online at the SU Bookstore or SU IT Services. The Setnor School of Music also strongly recommends students purchase Microsoft Office and Sibelius music notation software (version 7 or later) for use on their computer.

Department of Transmedia

All transmedia majors are expected to have access to Adobe's Creative Suite applications, and we recommend subscribing to the Creative Cloud Student Edition. After the first year, additional software purchases for all majors will be required based on course of study and are included in course syllabi.
