CRS
The undergraduate program in communication and rhetorical studies (CRS) involves the academic study of human communication in all its many forms. Whether it is the way two people form a relationship, the way a group interacts to perform a task, the way an organization crafts a collective identity, the way a political campaign forges its message, or the way audiences react to film and television, you will learn how people engage in communicative activities.
Understanding how communication works is crucial to every human endeavor.
The CRS program is founded around two guiding principles. First, the major represents a balance between “big picture,” conceptual courses and “hands-on,” practical skills courses. So, in CRS you can study the ways that ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle conceived of persuasion and citizenship and study the most effective means to deliver a public speech.
Our second main principle is flexibility. The CRS major is perfect for students who want to craft their own program of study. You can choose not only from a wide variety of electives within CRS but can also combine the program with a wide variety of other majors without needing any additional time to complete your degree.
Balance and flexibility make CRS a great major for the 21st century. Very few people will remain in the same career field throughout their professional lives, and most people will find that their own personal interests and ambitions will take them through a wide variety of professional and civic activities. But wherever you go and whatever profession you undertake, the core skills involved in the CRS program will help: the ability to listen, think critically, organize information, lead groups, and advocate for yourself and others.
