Welcome Prospective CRS Graduate Student!

The MA program in Communication and Rhetorical Studies provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for students hoping to pursue further study in Communication Studies.  Our program has a strong academic research focus and is ideal for students planning to go on to pursue doctoral level education.  One of the unique advantages of our MA-only program is that our Master’s students are our main focus.  Graduates of our MA program have gone on to great success at the nation’s top Communication Studies doctoral programs including: Pittsburgh, Iowa, Arizona State, and the University of Texas.

Another great advantage to graduate study at SU is the high quality programs surrounding CRS.  Graduate students in CRS can take up to three courses outside the department which allows our students to take graduate courses in some of SU’s other great programs like: Philosophy, Women’s Studies and Composition and Cultural Rhetoric.  These strong interdisciplinary ties allow students in the CRS program to pursue highly specialized topics of study across a number of disciplinary perspectives.

Finally, the CRS program maintains a vibrant and active scholarly life.  In addition to regular departmental colloquia, the department hosts numerous conferences, symposiums and guest speakers.  The department’s ‘Public Memory Project,’ for instance, has hosted three major, international conferences.  Recent guest speakers hosted by the department include: Cara Finnegan (Illinois), Phaedra Pezzullo (Indiana), Gordon Mitchell (Pittsburgh), Karlyn Kohrs Campbell (Minnesota), and Robert Hariman (Northwestern).
