The Syracuse University Opera Theater will present Mozart’s immortal comic opera The Marriage of Figaro January 25 and 26, 2019, at 7 PM in Setnor Auditorium. The production will be fully staged with orchestra conducted by Dr. James Tapia. Admission is free; free parking is available.
The libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte is an adaptation of the controversial French play of the same name by Pierre Caron de Beaumarchais. Because it depicted a nobleman being outwitted by his servants, it is widely acknowledged to have contributed to the civil unrest that led to the French Revolution.
The SU version will be performed in English, and has been trimmed and adapted to suit the needs of the outstanding student cast.
Scenario: When Count Almaviva, with the aid of Figaro (the “Barber of Seville”), married his Countess, he swore off the so-called droit de seigneur, the feudal right of the Lord of the Manor to spend the wedding night with the bride of any of his servants; he also rewarded Figaro with a post as his valet. Now, several years later, he has come to regret that decision, and the focus of his attention is none other than Figaro’s fiancée Susanna, maidservant to the Countess. The situation is further complicated by the existence of a lawsuit and the presence of one Cherubino, a girl-crazy page; needless to say, there is ample plotting and counter-plotting in this domestic comedy, and, in the end, the women emerge victorious.
