The Prints of Lake Effect Editions at Syracuse University

On view at the Palitz Gallery in New York City, this exhibition celebrates 10 years of printmaking in the School of Art’s printmaking studio.

The Prints of Lake Effect Editions at Syracuse University celebrates 10 years of printmaking with a selection of work created by a long list of young artists who have worked at the Syracuse University printmaking studio in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). Lake Effect Editions is a press entity at the University that publishes works by visiting artists invited by the printmaking professors to work with undergraduate and graduate students each semester. These visiting artists will typically give a public lecture; give critiques to the students they work with; and create an edition of prints with the students, faculty, and staff. Through this engagement with a working artist, Lake Effect and its guiding professors, Dusty Herbig and Holly Greenberg, hope to give students the opportunity to work directly with master print artists from both the academic and professional print worlds to create fine, hand-pulled editions of works on paper. Students work side by side with the visiting artists who share their knowledge of printmaking and the tricks and techniques not taught as part of the regular curriculum in the printmaking intensive, a part of the studio arts programs in VPA’s School of Art.

Just Our Type Exhibition | Genet Gallery

An Exploration of Typography and the story behind Syracuse University's own Sherman typeface.

In 2016, Syracuse University hired Pentagram, the world’s largest independent design consultancy, to create a new visual identity for the 21st century. When it was discovered that there was a unique connection between the University and Frederic W. Goudy, one of America’s foremost type designers, and that the Special Collections Research Center was in possession of original Goudy type matrices, the decision was made to incorporate these original artifacts into the project. Just Our Type highlights the new Sherman Book typeface, developed from Goudy’s original design by Chester Jenkins of Village Type Foundry, the cornerstone of the University’s new brand identity. Through documentary video, didactic timelines and displays, and examples of original Goudy artifacts from the University’s Special Collections, this exhibition explores the elements typography through the lens of Syracuse’s own signature typeface.

The 14th annual Syracuse International Film Festival (SYRFILMFEST) includes films by College of Visual and Performing Arts students, faculty and alumni, as well as programming curated by faculty or presented by VPA. A full festival schedule can be found at www.filminsyracuse.com.

The festival’s VPA connections include:

  • “Honoring Michal Bat Adam: The Road to Where.” Michal Bat-Adam is Israel’s first woman film director. Featuring Hope I’m in the Frame by Netalie Braun (2017) and The Road to Where by Bat-Adam (2016). Co-presented by VPA. (Oct. 18)
  • The Show (2017) by Giancarlo Esposito, past guest of the VPA film program. This pulse-pounding thriller is about a reality show that exploits the on-camera deaths of its players on live TV. Interview with Esposito to follow. Presented by VPA’s film program. (Oct. 19)
  • Dabka (2017) by VPA alumnus Bryan Buckley ’85. When rookie journalist Jay Bahadur (Evan Peters) has an inspiring chance encounter with his idol (Al Pacino), he uproots his life and moves to Somalia looking for the story of a lifetime. Presented by VPA. (Oct. 20)
  • “David and Carol North Schmuckler New Filmmakers Showcase.” This is a showcase of some of the best films produced by students in the VPA film program in 2017 along with a new film from Le Moyne College film students. (Oct. 21)
  • “Dan Silver Program.” VPA alumnus Dan Silver ’01 is vice president, head of platforms and content/new media for Marvel’s Digital Media Group. In this entertaining talk, Silver will intersperse his comments, observations, and insights with clips from Marvel 1:1 Genesis: Brandi Chastain (Marvel Entertainment and ESPN Films, 2014); The High Five (ESPN Films, 2014); Subterranean Stadium (ESPN Films, 2015); and Seventh Generation (ABC News, 2017).   • Sleight (2016) by J.D. Dillard and Alex Theurer. In Sleight, a young street magician, Bo (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents passing, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. Presented by VPA’s Department of Transmedia. (Oct. 21)
  • “New Directions in Short Form Film.” Includes films by VPA film faculty members Vasilios Papaioannu G’12 (Shells, 2017) and Jeffrey Palmer (Origins, 2013). Co-presented by VPA and the film program. (Oct. 21)
  • Sylvio (2017), by Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney ’04, is the story of a small-town gorilla, Sylvio, who is stuck in his job at a debt collection agency. Birney is a VPA alumnus, as is Peter Davis ’04 (production designer and actor) and Eric LaPlante ’04 (director of photography). Presented by VPA’s film program. (Oct. 21)
  • “New Russian Experimental Films,” curated by Boryana Rossa, assistant professor in VPA’s Department of Transmedia, which is presenting the program. (Oct. 21)
  • Freak Talks About Sex (1999). Winner of the Hamptons International Film Festival, Freak Talks About Sex is about Dave Keenan (Josh Hamilton) who left Syracuse for a new life in Arizona. Presented by VPA’s film program. (Oct. 21)

Boîte-en-Valise: Generate

Six international contemporary artists, including School of Art faculty, bring a new exhibition to Point of Contact Gallery.

Six international contemporary artists have been invited to bring a new exhibition to Point of Contact Gallery and Syracuse University. Curated by Joanne Bushnell (director of Aspex Gallery, U.K.); Stephanie James (director of the School of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts); and Mark Segal (the artists agency, U.K.), each artist contributes work to this international project, which aims to develop networks and forums for collaboration for contemporary arts practitioners, audiences in New York State and the south of England through the international art hub of the Venice Biennale. The artists include Yvonne Buchanan of VPA's School of Art, Mia Delve (U.K.), Tom Hall of VPA's School of Art, Mika Mollenkopf (U.S.), Harold Offeh (U.K.) and Susan Stockwell (U.K.).

"Boîte-en-Valise" encourages transportability of practice, the nurturing of collaboration and cross-fertilization of artistic practice. For "Boîte-en-Valise: Generate," artists worked with individuals and communities in Portsmouth and Syracuse to develop the work.

Each artist is transporting the means to generate their work for Point of Contact Gallery, begun by working with people and places over several days in Syracuse, in a normal-sized suitcase. To be transported as luggage on a normal flight, train or bus journey and taken from the suitcase for presentation without any fixing to walls, floors and/or ceilings of the venues. These six artists bring together works including sculpture, performance, video, photography and sound as well as interventions and conversations.

"Boîte-en-Valise: Generate" launched at Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth, U.K., before relocating to the preview week of the Venice Biennale in May 2017 and concludes at the Point of Contact Gallery.
