This summer, I gave a talk called “Art That Does Not Look Like Art,” and I thought that might be a good way to introduce myself. Much of my recent art does not look like art. It looks like an art school (http://www.theasintheas.org/) or just working a job (http://jsfoundation.org), or eight-foot diameter bicycle-powered zoetropes (http://www.spectresofliberty.com).
Some of my favorite artists who also don’t make are that looks like art are:
- Allan Kaprow
- Mel Chin
- Wochenklausur
- Critical Art Ensemble
- The Yes Men
- Christine Hill
- Improv Everywhere
- Mierle Ukeles
- Teching Hsieh
- Minerva Cuevas
- Ellie Harrison
I think this work asks lots of good questions about art and institutions, art and its connection to life and to society, of audience and participation, of skills and reskilling. It does more than ask questions, though. It offers us new experiences, critique and insight, and even offers solutions to pressing issues of our day. I’ll write more about ATDNLLA in later posts…probably.
