Fiber arts/material studies

The fiber arts/material studies master of fine arts (M.F.A.) degree program* is concerned with the exploration of the creative, conceptual, and multi-dimensional aspects of fibers, textiles, and related materials. In addition to traditional and nontraditional fiber practices, students are encouraged to explore the intersections and connections with ideas, materials, techniques and technologies of other media.

This cross disciplinary activity provides a platform for exploration and inclusion of atypical concepts and creative activities.

The fiber arts/material studies and Department of Art faculty is made up of nationally recognized artists who maintain an active and engaged studio practice. The development of the fibers students individually and as a community is important to the program and is nurtured through regular student interaction with faculty, staff, and visiting artists. There are continual opportunities for consultation with the faculty as work progresses and through critiques, reading groups, and discussions.

Our students work in a thriving, collaborative community of student artists from many disciplines in addition to fibers: metals, ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, transmedia, computer art, and video. Students are also invited to take advantage of the wide range of academics offered within the breadth of departments available at Syracuse University. We are confident that the diversity of points of view is one of the strongest and healthiest aspects of our M.F.A. program.

*Please note that the college is no longer accepting applications to the fiber arts/material studies program. However, the School of Art and Design continues to offer courses in fiber arts as support to majors in the school. Consider our graduate program in sculpture, into which these courses may be integrated.
