Enjoy innovative and versatile programming

Since 1887, women’s choirs have been singing at Syracuse University. Honoring the more than 125 year tradition of ‘Women in Song’ at Syracuse University, the Women's Choir is known for its diverse performance repertoire, active performance schedule, and annual festival with distinguished guest conductors.

The Women's Choir has become known for its innovative and versatile programming, drawing on music from various historical periods and contemporary compositions representing many different styles and cultures.

Women’s Choir members are drawn from undergraduate and graduate music majors and non-music majors from across the campus. The choir has performed with the Cassatt String Quartet, the New York Treble Singers (New York City), the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the New York University Women’s Choir, and the SU Symphony Orchestra. Tours have included New York City; Toronto, Canada; Lake Placid, New York; and Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

The Women’s Choir has collaborated with composer/conductors Mark Sirett, Gregg Smith, Virginia Davidson, Glenn McClure, and Francisco Núñez, and it has premiered works by Robert Harris, Donald Patriquin, Nicolas Scherzinger, Martha Sullivan, Nick Page, Kala Pierson (winner of the 2009 inaugural Gregg Smith National Choral Composition Contest), and the late Liu Zhuang.

The Women's Choir has hosted the Eastman School of Music/University of Rochester Women's Chorus, Cantabile Women's Chorus (Canada), the Buffalo Master Chorale Women's Ensemble, the College of William and Mary Women's Chorus, and Buffalo State College Women's Chorus. Distinguished conductors of past annual SU Women’s Choir Festivals included Sandra Snow, Doreen Rao, Thomas Hall, Judith Willoughby, Martha Sullivan, Lori-Anne Dolloff, Robert Harris, Marian Dolan, Paul Caldwell, Cara Tasher, and Nancy Menk. These activities reflect the significant contribution of the SU women to the cultural life of the University, the region, and to the choral art.
