Melissa A. Bassett-Graetz

B.A., M.A., Syracuse University

2014, 2017

Arts Administrator, Kalanidhi Dance

Melissa A. Bassett-Graetz earned a B.A. in music from the Setnor School and went on to graduate with a master of arts degree in arts leadership administration from the Janklow Arts Leadership Program at Syracuse University. Her research and thesis revolved around the relationship between displacement and culture. More specifically, she has been looking into how to create meaningful and effective programs for refugees who have been resettled. These programs work to create opportunities for cultural preservation, integration, and education. During this time she created a program between Wacheva Cultural Arts and HopePrint to provide a drum circle program to refugee and inner-city school students. She has decided to go to American University's School of International Service to pursue a second master's in social enterprise with a focus on these themes and issues. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, working on this program and at Kalanidhi Dance as its arts administrator. This non-profit is a classical Indian dance studio dedicated to the performance and education of the Kuchipudi dance style. She hopes to travel and work with NGO's, governmental agencies, and non-profits to promote creative and cultural programs for refugees while maintaining a percussion lesson studio. The Setnor School’s Gilbert Week New York City immersion program was the first step in her learning about how to work in the arts and how the cultural and creative industries impact community engagement and enrichment.
