In first-year foundation you begin with the basic skills of garment construction and fashion design concepts. You see yourself grow as a designer, taking courses in draping and conceptual design. At this point you turn your initial drawings into three-dimensional forms, and finally, finished designs. Our computer-aided design (CAD) courses feature the Gerber System, the standard computer system used throughout the fashion industry.

You also study experimental textiles, knit design, accessory design, surface pattern design, fashion drawing, history of art, and history of fashion. You can learn the skills necessary for fashion shoots by taking photography courses outside the department.

You may enter your designs in our annual fashion show that attracts area and industry professionals. As a senior you present your six- to eight-piece collection. Photographs taken at the fashion show are key to building your portfolio. The Fashion Association of Design Students, our student group, plays an active role in the fashion show and also arranges for smaller shows, field trips, and visiting speakers. Our program often welcomes professional designers and retail experts to campus; past visitors have included Oscar de la Renta, Henry Grethel, Tommy Hilfiger, Mary McFadden, Nicole Miller, Thai Nguyen, Todd Oldham, Russell Simmons, and Stephanie Solomon '72.

A direct placement program with the London College of Fashion offers students majoring in fashion design a professional semester in London, England, during their junior year. In addition to classes they would normally take on the SU campus, students take courses in such areas as millinery design, shoe design, and electronic machine embroidery.

Our graduates work for design houses in small-scale or mass distribution, trade magazines, fashion periodicals, and support industries.

Please note that students interested in fashion design must declare their major before they begin their first year.
